Justin McLeod helped turn modern romance into something people could manage with a thumb. Now the Hinge founder is moving in the opposite direction with an AI dating app idea built around fewer choices, fewer profiles, and a lot more trust in the machine. Because apparently dating needed a product roadmap.
McLeod has raised $18 million for Overtone, a new service that he says is not really a dating app in the familiar sense. There are no public profiles to browse and no long queue of possible matches to reject before lunch. Instead, Overtone is designed to learn about users through their own words, then make an introduction only when it believes two people are actually worth meeting.
What Overtone is trying to change about dating apps
The premise is a sharp turn from the swipe-based model McLeod helped popularize at Hinge, where users were encouraged to sort through potential partners one prompt, photo, or split-second instinct at a time.
Overtone’s pitch is more curated. The service aims to understand who someone is, what they want, and how they talk about themselves before arranging a connection. In theory, that means less browsing, less fatigue, and fewer conversations that begin with enthusiasm and end in the quiet graveyard of unread messages.
That shift is also a pointed admission from one of the biggest names in online dating: the old model may have trained people to keep searching rather than actually connect. McLeod spent nearly 15 years building Hinge into a major dating platform. Late last year, he stepped down as Hinge’s chief executive to focus on this next project.
Why people are comparing it to Black Mirror
The obvious comparison is Black Mirror, specifically the episode “Hang the DJ.” In that story, users rely on an app called The System, which assigns relationships and tells couples exactly how long each one will last. After running people through a series of pairings, it eventually calculates a final match with a 99.8 percent compatibility score.
Overtone is not proposing countdown clocks for relationships, which is probably the point. Still, the resemblance is hard to miss: a system studies people, limits the noise, and decides when two strangers should meet because it believes they may work together.
The emotional appeal is clear. Dating app users are tired. Many want fewer options, not endless choice dressed up as freedom. But the trade-off is just as clear: handing more decision-making to software means trusting that the software understands desire, timing, character, and chemistry. That’s a big ask for any technology, even one with a tasteful landing page.
Who is backing McLeod’s new bet
Overtone’s $18 million funding round includes backing from Match Group, the company that owns Hinge, Tinder, and OkCupid. That makes the arrangement especially notable: McLeod’s former corporate home is now helping fund his attempt to rethink the very system that made dating apps dominant.
FirstMark Capital and Pace Capital also participated in the round. Overtone’s board includes relationship therapist Esther Perel, Spencer Rascoff, and Diana Chapman, giving the company a mix of relationship expertise, tech investment experience, and business strategy as it tries to turn the concept into a working product.
The swipe era is already under pressure
McLeod is not alone in trying to move dating away from endless swiping. The broader app category has been reassessing a format that once felt efficient and now often feels exhausting.
Bumble has been relaunching with less emphasis on swiping, while Facebook has been leaning on an AI dating assistant to reduce user fatigue. The industry appears to understand that people are not simply looking for more profiles. They are looking for help making a choice that feels human, or at least less like scheduling admin.
That is the space Overtone is entering: not a promise of instant love, but a bet that people may accept a quieter, more selective system if it saves them from doing all the sorting themselves. Whether that feels thoughtful or unsettling may depend on how good the introductions are.
