George R. R. Martin’s depression struggle became public after the author returned to his personal blog following a six-month absence. In an unusually candid post on August 4, the 77-year-old wrote that he had lost friends, faced sadness and depression, and felt overwhelmed by a year filled with both major successes and painful setbacks.

“This year has been... stressful, to say the least,” Martin wrote. “So much has been happening, it’s been overwhelming. Some great things, exciting things. Dreams coming true. But there have been nightmares too.”

He added: “I have lost friends. Battled sadness and depression. The worst may be yet to come.” Martin did not identify the friends he had lost or elaborate on what he feared might still happen.
