The rumored EA FC 27 face scan could make virtual football feel considerably more personal. It could also hand Electronic Arts a complicated set of questions about facial data, consent and players using the tool to impersonate other people. For now, though, the feature remains an unverified leak rather than something EA has announced.
The claim comes from FUT Sheriff, an insider known for EA Sports FC leaks. A reposted image describes a feature called PhotoFit with the instruction: “Capture your face to create an Avatar; customize it.” No EA representative or independent outlet has confirmed the tool, its capture method, supported platforms or compatible modes.
That missing information matters because EA has already published detailed breakdowns of Career, Clubs and its new social space without mentioning facial scanning.
What does the PhotoFit leak claim?
According to the leak, PhotoFit would let players scan their face, adjust the resulting model and apply it to an in-game Avatar. Player Career and Clubs would be obvious uses because both involve creating a footballer, but the leak does not identify any specific mode.
The Grounds is another likely destination. EA has confirmed that Avatars will underpin both The Grounds and Clubs, allowing players to carry their created identity through the connected experiences. Still, “likely” is doing important work here. EA’s August 4 Grounds and Clubs deep dive describes extensive Avatar customization but says nothing about PhotoFit. Its Career deep dive also omits the feature.
EA has confirmed that The Grounds will accommodate up to 100 players in a shared space divided into three districts. It will include small-sided matches, Kickabouts, Clubs and other activities. The company lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2 as supported platforms, although an EA Help footnote about The Grounds currently leaves out Switch 2.
Face scanning has a much longer FIFA history
PhotoFit would not be the series’ first attempt at putting players’ real faces on digital footballers. EA introduced Game Face to its football games with FIFA 10, not FIFA 12 as some reports have claimed.
At the 2009 launch, EA said FIFA 10’s Virtual Pro system would allow users to create a player with Game Face and use that character across multiple modes. The feature relied on uploaded photographs rather than the facial sensors available on many modern smartphones. It remained part of the series for years before disappearing after FIFA 16.
That history explains some of the excitement around the leak. For longtime players, PhotoFit sounds less like a revolution than the return of a familiar idea with newer technology. Whether it would produce better results is another matter.
Reddit user RedDevil525 noted, “This was a feature from FIFA like 15+ years ago.” Another user, bigloudbang, remembered that previous scans “9/10…came out terribly.” Digital self-expression has advanced since then, but software remains fully capable of turning a normal face into an unsettling administrative error.
Privacy and impersonation could become the real issue
A modern face-scanning system would raise questions that were less prominent during the Game Face era. EA has not explained whether PhotoFit would store uploaded photographs, retain facial geometry derived from those images or process everything locally on a user’s device.
Other unanswered issues include:
- How players could delete photographs and derived facial data
- What consent rules would apply to minors
- Whether users could scan another person without permission
- How EA would stop recreations of celebrities, politicians or other public figures
- What moderation tools would operate inside a social space supporting up to 100 players
Some Reddit users focused on exactly those concerns. User micelimaxi questioned who would want to provide “a scan of their face,” while others warned that players could use the feature to reproduce controversial public figures. That would turn PhotoFit from a customization feature into a moderation problem, especially in The Grounds, where customized Avatars will be visible to large groups.
None of this proves EA cannot handle the risks. It simply means the company would need clear answers before asking players to put their faces into another online database.
When will EA FC 27 be released?
EA FC 27 launches worldwide on September 25, 2026. September 18 is not the general release date, despite earlier reports. It is the earliest access date for players entitled to seven days of early access.
EA has already outlined other additions, including a card-grading system for Ultimate Team and the expansion of Clubs through The Grounds. PhotoFit, however, is still absent from the company’s official announcements as of August 5.
FUT Sheriff has accurately reported EA Sports FC information before, which gives the claim some credibility, but reputation is not confirmation. Until EA explains whether PhotoFit exists, where it works and what happens to users’ facial data, players are left with an appealing concept and a rather large list of practical questions.
