The long-running Batman story where exhaustion is not a metaphor is getting its animated spotlight. DC and Warner Bros. Animation debuted the first trailer for Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall on Tuesday at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, where attendees also saw a screening of the first film in the planned trilogy.

The R-rated animated feature adapts the opening stretch of the major 1990s DC Comics storyline, best remembered for Bane breaking Batman physically and mentally. It is not subtle material, but then again, neither is a supervillain whose core strategy is workplace burnout with explosives.

What the trailer shows

The first footage introduces Anson Mount as Bruce Wayne and Batman, with Michael Mando voicing Bane. The official synopsis puts Batman in the pressure cooker: “When the mysterious behemoth known only as Bane frees Batman’s entire Rogue’s Gallery from Arkham Asylum, the Caped Crusader is pushed to his mental and physical breaking point.”
