TMZ reports that records show former Florida Democratic gubernatorial nominee Andrew Gillum was taken into custody last week in Alabama on drug-related offenses.

According to online police records cited by the outlet, Gillum was arrested Thursday night by officers in Daphne, Alabama, and booked into the Baldwin County jail. The records list charges of possession of dangerous drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of marijuana.

As of TMZ’s report, the Daphne Police Department had not released further details about what led to the arrest. So, for now, the public record gives the charges, but not the scene-by-scene version. A rare moment of restraint from the information economy.

What police records say about the Alabama case

The arrest took place in Daphne, a city in Baldwin County, Alabama. TMZ reported that local officers took Gillum into custody Thursday night and booked him into the Baldwin County jail.

Online records list three charges:

  • Possession of dangerous drugs
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia
  • Possession of marijuana

TMZ also mentioned Gillum’s previous 2020 police encounter, when paramedics found him and another man inside a room at the Mondrian Hotel in South Beach, Florida.

According to reports from that incident, a third man called 911 because he feared the person with Gillum may have overdosed. Police later released body camera footage that showed several prescription pill bottles inside the hotel room. Officers also recovered three small bags of methamphetamine.

Prosecutors did not formally charge Gillum or the other man in the room. Authorities said there was not enough evidence to directly connect either person to the drugs, which were not found on them.

His narrow 2018 race against Ron DeSantis

Gillum was once one of the highest-profile Democrats in Florida politics. He served as mayor of Tallahassee from 2014 to 2018 before running for governor.

In 2018, he won the Democratic primary and faced Republican nominee Ron DeSantis in the general election. DeSantis won by roughly 30,000 votes, a narrow margin in a state that enjoys making national politics feel like a stress test.

The Alabama arrest is the latest public legal issue involving Gillum, though key details of the new case remain limited pending further information from police or court records.
