Ronnie Ortiz-Magro is putting context around a moment that worried fans and set the internet into diagnosis mode, rarely its most careful setting.
After footage from a Jersey Shore: Family Vacation press interview appeared to show him nodding off, the MTV personality shared a candid update on May 5 about his mental health and the treatment he says he is currently receiving.
Ronnie explains what fans saw
In an Instagram Story, Ortiz-Magro wrote that appearances can be misleading.
“Even though everything may look perfect on the outside,” he said, “every day I battle my depression, bipolar and anxiety in silence. I know there are many people who do the same.”
The 40-year-old said he takes prescription medication to manage his symptoms and attends therapy every week. He also made clear that those steps are part of ongoing care, not a quick fix.
He connected the viral press moment directly to those struggles, saying he had been trying to show up for his Jersey Shore castmates while also dealing with recent emotional strain.
“What you saw during that interview was evidence of my ongoing struggle,” he wrote. “Some recent emotional events had begun to wear on me.”
Ortiz-Magro added that some of his medication can cause difficult side effects, which he said he is usually able to manage privately. This time, the timing collided with a public appearance.
“Wanting to be with my castmates for a press tour celebration at the same time as carrying this weight required me to work through the effects in a public setting; as a result, I was taped nodding off, which started rumors and accusations,” he wrote. “I thought I could be strong enough to get through it, but what you saw was me trying to battle through one of my toughest moments.”
He continued, “I pushed myself to try to show up for other people when I just needed to show up for myself.”
He says the moment shifted his priorities
Ortiz-Magro said the experience reminded him that his health has to come first. He also invited followers to share their own experiences, saying it helps him feel less isolated.
“Thank you again to everyone who sent their prayers and love,” he concluded. “It means more at a time like this more than I can explain. If you know anyone suffering from mental health related difficulties, please be kind and patient.”
The post marked his first direct explanation following the interview clip. One day earlier, on May 4, he had alluded to depression-related struggles through a series of reposts on his Instagram Story.

Mike Sorrentino had already voiced concern
Before Ortiz-Magro’s statement, his Jersey Shore costar Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino publicly addressed the concern around him.
On April 30, Sorrentino wrote on Instagram that he had reached out to Ortiz-Magro but had not heard back at that point.
“This situation is still developing, and while I do not know the full extent of what he may be going through, I do know it is separate from my path,” Sorrentino wrote. “If he is willing, I will be there for him.”
Sorrentino also referenced his own sobriety, which he said he has worked to protect for nearly 11 years.
“My heart is with anyone who is struggling,” he added. “I have worked hard to protect my sobriety for nearly 11 years, and I honor that every day while continuing to show up with compassion for others.”
For a franchise built on cameras catching everything, Ortiz-Magro’s update is a reminder that a clip rarely tells the whole story, especially when health is involved.
