Prince Harry is reportedly considering a Diana documentary to mark the 30th anniversary of his mother’s death, although no project has yet been approved or formally announced.

The Duke of Sussex is said to have approached Diana, Princess of Wales’s friends and relatives about appearing, including her brother, Charles Spencer, 9th Earl Spencer. Diana died in a car crash in Paris on August 31, 1997, meaning the anniversary falls in 2027.

A source told The Telegraph that Harry had discussed several possible projects for the occasion but was still deciding how best to commemorate her.

“The Duke has discussed a number of possible projects to mark the 30th anniversary of his mother Diana, Princess of Wales’s passing,” the source said.

“Nothing has been finalised or confirmed, and he is still considering the most meaningful way to honour her legacy during this important anniversary year.”

Who could produce the documentary?

If the programme goes ahead, Archewell Productions, the company founded by Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, is expected to produce it. Netflix also has a first-look arrangement with the couple, giving the streaming service an early opportunity to consider their projects.

That still leaves plenty undecided, including the format, contributors and eventual distributor. For now, the documentary remains an idea under discussion rather than a confirmed addition to anyone’s viewing schedule.

The timing is particularly sensitive because Charles Spencer is preparing to publish a memoir containing private conversations he says he had with Diana. Swan Song: Diana, My Sister is due to be released next week, with extracts already appearing in the Daily Mail.

Those excerpts include striking allegations about Diana’s marriage to the then Prince Charles and the royal family’s response after her death. Inevitably, the prospect of a documentary made by Diana’s younger son adds another layer to an anniversary that was never likely to pass quietly.

What does Charles Spencer claim in his memoir?

In one published extract, Spencer claims Diana told him she was divorcing Charles because he “was in love with his valet”. The remark is understood to refer to a male member of staff, although the allegation has not been independently established.

Spencer also alleges that Charles, now King Charles III, said after Diana’s death: “Rest assured, we’ll forget her soon enough.”

Buckingham Palace responded with an unusually pointed statement, saying that grief between siblings can “cloud reason, affect judgment and colour memory”. The palace did not simply allow the extracts to circulate unanswered, which suggests officials regarded the claims as more than routine publishing noise.

Elsewhere in the book, Spencer reportedly compares the treatment of Harry and Meghan with the pressure Diana faced. He describes the media attention surrounding the couple as a “cancerous influence” and argues that lessons should have been learned from the damage caused by intense scrutiny of his sister.

Those comments place him firmly alongside Harry’s longstanding criticism of the British press, even as his decision to publish private family conversations creates its own questions about privacy. Royal memoirs have a way of making that principle rather flexible.

Why is Harry’s UK return relevant?

Reports about the possible film follow Harry and Meghan’s recent return to the United Kingdom from California, six years after they stepped back from senior royal duties in 2020.

Earlier in September, it was also reported that the couple moved their children to another school only days into the new term because of security concerns. The family’s protection arrangements have remained a persistent issue for Harry, particularly when visiting Britain.

A documentary about Diana would fit with his previous public work. Harry has repeatedly discussed his mother’s death, the effect it had on his mental health and his belief that intrusive media coverage contributed to the circumstances surrounding her final years.

Whether those discussions become a completed film is still uncertain. No title, release date or participant list has been confirmed. What exists at present is a reported proposal, a major anniversary and a fresh family memoir arriving at an exceptionally convenient moment.
