Michael Flatley has announced the death of Niamh Flatley, his wife of 20 years, at the age of 52. The Lord of the Dance star confirmed the news in a statement posted on Instagram on Monday, 5 October.
“My heart is broken. I have lost my beautiful wife, Niamh, and my best friend,” he wrote. “My gorgeous bride of twenty years has gone to the Lord in Heaven.
“She was the most loving mother, wife and person, and our lives will never be the same without her.
“Thank you for all the love and kindness you have shown us. Please keep Niamh, Michael St James, and our family in your thoughts and prayers.”
Flatley shared several photographs alongside the statement, including an image from the couple’s wedding and another showing them with their son, Michael St James. Fans and friends responded with messages of sympathy and support.
Family asks for privacy after sudden loss
Niamh reportedly died at Beacon Hospital in Dublin, according to representatives for Michael Flatley.
“The Flatley and O'Brien families are devastated by Niamh’s sudden passing and have asked that their privacy be respected as they come to terms with this heartbreaking loss,” a representative said in a statement provided to the Irish Star.
The families also thanked the doctors, nurses and other staff at Beacon Hospital who had cared for Niamh during the previous few weeks, as well as those who had offered their support.
Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date. No further details about the circumstances of her death were provided.
The request for privacy is clear, as such requests generally are, despite the internet’s occasional determination to treat grief as a public filing system.
How Michael and Niamh Flatley met
Like her husband, Niamh began dancing when she was young. She later appeared in several major stage productions, including Riverdance, Lord of the Dance, Feet of Flames and Celtic Tiger.
Michael, now 68, first met her while working on Riverdance in the 1990s. Their relationship did not become romantic until 2006, and they married later that year in Fermoy, County Cork.
The couple welcomed their son, Michael St James, in 2007.
During an appearance on Piers Morgan’s Life Stories in 2013, Michael described Niamh as highly intelligent, extraordinarily beautiful and his closest friend.
“She is my best friend. She is extraordinarily beautiful, inside and out,” he said. “I am proud to be her husband. I am blessed to have her.”
Flatley praised his wife’s courage during illness
Michael also spoke publicly about Niamh’s support during his own serious health problems. He had previously been diagnosed with cancer and, in a 2025 interview with the Irish Independent, recalled seeing her beside his hospital bed while he was in severe pain.
“I was haemorrhaging and convulsing on a hospital bed and I kept passing out,” he said. “They couldn't give me the painkillers necessary.”
He remembered nurses trying to help him, though the pain left him barely aware of what was happening around him. When he regained consciousness during one of those episodes, Niamh was there and smiling at him.
“Can you imagine the courage from my wife, to put on a smile in that position?” he said. “The courage that took?”
His latest tribute returned to the description he had used for years: Niamh was not only his wife, but his best friend.
