Matthew Perry’s Assistant Faces Sentencing

Calio’s letter is unambiguous. She wrote that Iwamasa failed to protect Perry and was more focused on preserving the benefits of his role than on the actor’s safety.

She said his “true concern was not upsetting the lifestyle to which he’d become accustomed,” adding that she had read he “watched Matthew seize up more than once and never told any of us who cared so deeply for Matthew.”

Calio’s strongest accusations in the letter

Calio directly blamed Iwamasa for Perry’s death, using language that leaves very little room for courthouse diplomacy.

“Kenny Iwamasa killed my friend,” she wrote. “His narcissistic, outrageous, irresponsible behavior, his psychotic plan, caused him to heat up the jacuzzi, give Matthew the giant shot he requested and leave him alone to die.”

The letter also says Calio and Perry had been working on plans for the Matthew Perry Foundation, an organization intended to help people struggling with addiction. After Perry died, she claimed, Iwamasa repeatedly sought a role with the foundation and said that was what Perry would have wanted.

Calio rejected that claim plainly.

“No, it wasn’t,” she wrote.

She added that Iwamasa had “many outrageous requests and expectations that he thought would continue for the rest of his life.”

What the judge will decide now

The sentencing hearing is set for May 27, 2026. Iwamasa faces a potential prison term of up to 15 years, though the sentence will ultimately depend on the court’s assessment of the case, the filings, any plea terms and the arguments presented at the hearing.

Calio’s letter ends by arguing that no sentence would be adequate.

“Whatever sentence he receives, it won’t be long enough,” she wrote. “He will always be known as the man who killed Matthew Perry, I suppose there should be some comfort in that.”

The court will decide the legal punishment. Calio’s filing makes clear that, for at least one person close to Perry, the personal verdict has already been reached.
