Talk of a Madonna and Charli XCX feud is gathering pace after Madonna appeared to take aim at the younger pop star’s recent claim that “the dance floor is dead.” For two artists who have both built careers on club culture, reinvention and a finely tuned sense of provocation, the exchange has landed exactly where one might expect: all over social media, with fans happily reading the room like it is a legal document.

Madonna, 67, posted an Instagram photo dump showing herself out on a neon-lit dance floor, wearing knee-high lace-up boots and a floaty white skirt. The pictures were lively enough, but the caption did most of the work.

“If your Dance floor feels dead. Maybe you’re playing the wrong music,” she wrote.
