Jim Carrey is heading back to the future, this time without a blue hedgehog beside him. Warner Bros. has confirmed that the actor will lead a live-action The Jetsons movie, reviving Hanna-Barbera’s space-age family after years of stalled attempts.
The studio announced the project in a letter to shareholders, following unofficial reports from last fall that a film was being developed. Those reports also linked Jurassic World: Dominion director Colin Trevorrow to the project, although Warner Bros. has not confirmed his involvement.
Why the film marks a notable return for Jim Carrey
The movie would be Carrey’s first non-Sonic the Hedgehog feature in more than a decade. His last was the unconventional 2016 murder mystery Dark Crimes.
He has not abandoned the Sonic universe, however. Carrey is expected to return as Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 4, scheduled for 2027.
That continued screen work was not always guaranteed. After Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Carrey publicly considered retirement and largely stepped away from the spotlight. He attracted fresh attention in February when he appeared in France to accept a prestigious award and delivered his speech entirely in French. The performance was convincing enough to produce online speculation that an impersonator or clone had appeared in his place, because apparently fluency now requires forensic analysis.
Carrey gave a more practical explanation for returning in Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
“I came back to this universe because, first of all, I get to play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch,” he said. “And, you know, it’s just… I bought a lot of stuff and I need the money, frankly.”
What is The Jetsons about?
Created as a science-fiction counterpart to The Flintstones, the original Hanna-Barbera cartoon premiered in 1962. It later returned with additional episodes during the 1980s.
The series follows George and Jane Jetson, their children Judy and Elroy, and Rosie, the family’s robot maid. They live in a gleaming future filled with flying cars, automated homes and technology that was designed as playful fantasy but has occasionally looked less unrealistic with time.
Carrey’s casting gives the new adaptation a performer closely associated with exaggerated physical comedy, while his later work has also shown a more restrained side. Warner Bros. has not yet disclosed which character he will play, who else will join the cast or when the film is expected to arrive.
Why has a Jetsons reboot taken so long?
Hollywood has spent more than two decades trying to bring the Jetson family back in a major new production.
A live-action film was planned in the early 2000s but never moved forward. The rapper formerly known as Kanye West was later connected to the project in some capacity, although Warner Bros. said at the time that those conversations had only been “preliminary.”
Other concepts explored over the past decade included:

- A live-action sitcom produced by Robert Zemeckis
- The newly confirmed film starring Carrey
None of the earlier plans reached audiences. The latest version now has a major star and an official studio announcement, which puts it further along than several of its predecessors. Whether it finally reaches production remains the important question, especially for viewers who have watched this particular spacecraft circle the runway for years.
