Jessie J splits from Chanan Safir Colman after privately ending their romantic relationship, with the singer saying the decision came “some time ago” and followed a “sad and difficult situation.”
The 38-year-old musician shared the news on Instagram with a reel featuring herself, Colman and their son Sky, set to The Beatles’ “Here Comes The Sun.” It was a gentle soundtrack for a post that was, in practical terms, a public relationship statement. Celebrity romance updates rarely arrive by registered mail.
What Jessie J said about the breakup
In her post, Jessie J wrote: “Chanan and I decided to end our romantic relationship some time ago, it has been a sad and difficult situation, but we have been focused on navigating the change privately and positively for a healthy and happy co parenting environment for our son, and ourselves.”
She added that making the announcement publicly was her way of preventing speculation from filling the gap.
“Unfortunately, being in the public eye, this is the easiest way to let people know the truth, before rumours circulate or a false narrative is written,” she said.
Jessie, whose full name is Jessica Cornish, disabled comments on the post. She has 13.9 million Instagram followers, so that choice probably spared everyone a very long and mostly unnecessary public meeting.
How Jessie J and Chanan Safir Colman built a family
Jessie J and Denmark-born basketball player Chanan Safir Colman were first linked in 2021, though neither has publicly said exactly how they met.
They did not go fully public with their relationship until 2023. By then, Jessie had spoken warmly about Colman, saying they met just weeks after she suffered a miscarriage. She described him as a “beam of light” and “the calm to [her] crazy.”
The couple welcomed their son, Sky, in May 2023. Jessie later described her life with Colman as a “whirlwind love,” and over the years she often talked about their relationship in terms of family, stability and parenthood rather than showy celebrity presentation.
In her breakup announcement, she made clear that the family unit remains central, even if the romance has ended.
“We will always continue supporting each other with love, respect and care as friends and most importantly being Skys Mum and Dad,” she wrote, adding that if they are seen together or appear on each other’s social media, it is because they are “raising and loving Sky together, supported with a positive friendship.”
Why marriage was never the urgent question
In 2025, Jessie J told People that she and Colman had talked about marriage, but were not rushing toward it.
“We talk about it all the time, and we laugh about it all the time, and I’m sure we will, but we’re not in any rush,” she said. “I’ve always said that I’m not too fussed about getting married, and some people get really funny about that, but it’s my own preference.”
She said that if she did marry, she would want Sky to be old enough to understand and take part in the moment.
“We have a child. I feel like that is the most locked in that we can feel with each other,” she added.
At the time, Jessie also praised Colman as a natural parent, saying he had “exceeded [her] expectations.” Those comments land differently now, but they help explain the tone of her announcement: less dramatic collapse, more careful family transition.
Chanan supported Jessie J through cancer treatment
Colman was also with Jessie during a difficult health period. She previously revealed she had been diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer, sharing the news publicly in solidarity with others facing similar diagnoses.
Jessie underwent surgery in June 2025, shortly after performing at Capital’s Summertime Ball. In characteristic form, she joked that it was the “most dramatic way” to get a boob job, a line that carried more nerve than glamour.
Colman and Sky visited her during her hospital stay, and Jessie later wrote that she was “grateful” for the support of her family.
She had further cancer treatment in August 2025, which led her to rearrange and cancel scheduled tour dates.
Two months before announcing the split, Jessie confirmed she was cancer-free. After receiving her MRI result, she said she “sobbed for hours” and then “exhaled for the first time in a year.”
Jessie J’s past relationship with Channing Tatum
Before her relationship with Colman, Jessie J dated Hollywood actor Channing Tatum. The singer and the Magic Mike star were first linked in October 2018 and had an on-off relationship for around two years.
Her relationship with Colman lasted approximately five years, from their first public links in 2021 to her 2026 announcement that the romance had already ended.
For now, Jessie’s message is not about a feud or a dramatic parting. It is about setting the record straight, protecting her son’s world and keeping the co-parenting arrangement calm enough to survive public attention. That may not be glamorous, but it is probably the harder work.
