The Icebreaker Netflix series is officially moving forward, giving BookTok one more reason to behave normally online, or at least attempt it. Netflix confirmed on June 15 that Hannah Grace’s bestselling romance novel is being adapted for television, with Alex Cooper producing through Unwell Productions.
The project brings together Cooper and her husband Matt Kaplan’s company with showrunner Amanda Lasher and writer Jade Bartlett. The adaptation comes as hockey romance keeps getting scooped up for TV, alongside buzzy titles like Off Campus and Heated Rivalry.
What Is Icebreaker About?
Grace’s 2022 novel follows Anastasia Allen, a competitive figure skater, and Nate Hawkins, a hockey player. Their paths cross when they are forced to share a practice rink, which is not exactly ideal for focus, training schedules, or emotional restraint.
The book took off on BookTok, where readers helped turn sports romance into a reliable pipeline for TV and film. The story mixes ambition, rivalry, and romance, with the kind of high-pressure setting that tends to make fictional people fall in love while pretending they are simply being practical.
Icebreaker is part of a broader book series that also includes Wildfire and Daydream. Lasher said she can’t wait to bring Grace’s world to television, especially given her long-standing affection for the genre.
“I have been a fan of steamy YA since the seventh grade, reading Judy Blume stealthily hidden behind a textbook,” Lasher said in a statement. “I love this genre, and it’s been a joy working with Jade, the team at Unwell, and Netflix to bring Hannah Grace’s beloved Icebreaker novel to the screen.”
Who Is Making The Netflix Adaptation?
Alex Cooper first teased the announcement on her Instagram Story on June 15, posting a photo of the novel with the message, “BookTok girlies, I have some exciting news for you…”
Soon after, the Call Her Daddy host confirmed her role as producer, adding the very measured update: “SCREAMING.”
Cooper is producing with Matt Kaplan through Unwell Productions. Lasher, whose previous producing credits include the original Gossip Girl and Togetherness, will serve as showrunner and co-write the series. Bartlett, who made her debut as a writer and director with Miller’s Girl starring Jenna Ortega and Martin Freeman, is also writing.
Bartlett said the project’s pull goes beyond the central romance.
“It’s been such a joy to play in Hannah Grace’s world of Icebreaker, a story filled with ambitious, talented, and undeniably sexy characters,” Bartlett said in a statement. “But the real special sauce is that, above all, they are good, deeply compassionate people…and we cannot get enough of them. Hannah has created the kind of world you want to live in, and Amanda and I are having an absolute romp with our incredible teams at Unwell and Netflix, bringing this cherished story to the screen.”
Has The Cast Or Release Date Been Announced?
Not yet. Grace addressed the early speculation directly in her own Instagram post on June 15, where she celebrated the adaptation and tried to keep the rumor cycle from skating off without supervision.
“I’m truly the luckiest girl in the world,” she wrote.
She also made clear that casting has not begun, or at least has not reached the public announcement stage. That matters because fans have already circulated edits suggesting actors such as Madelyn Cline and Jacob Elordi for the lead roles.
“There is zero casting news right now, but I’ll keep you posted along with other announcements when I’m allowed to!” Grace added. “If you haven’t heard it from me or Netflix/Unwell, it’s just a rumor.”
Netflix has also not announced a release date for the series.
