The Euphoria series finale delivered the kind of ending that immediately turns a TV episode into a group chat emergency. In Sunday night’s Season 3 closer, Zendaya’s Rue Bennett died after taking Percocet pills laced with fentanyl, a final shock in a season that had already abandoned subtlety.

Rue’s overdose was not framed as a random tragedy. The pills had been deliberately left within reach by crime lord Alamo Brown, who wanted her dead after learning she had been an informant. Knowing Rue’s long struggle with addiction, he counted on her taking them if they were placed within reach. Grim, efficient, and absolutely not a wellness arc.

How Rue Bennett’s story ended

The finale showed Rue ingesting the fentanyl-laced pills and overdosing. As she was dying, the episode moved into a dreamlike sequence where Rue reunited with Fezco, played by the late Angus Cloud, in a field after Fezco had escaped from prison.

For longtime viewers, the scene carried extra weight beyond the show’s plot. Cloud died in 2023 from acute intoxication following an accidental overdose, one year after Season 2 aired. Seeing Rue and Fezco together again gave the finale a deliberately emotional charge, especially for fans who had followed both characters’ bond and Cloud’s real-life death.

Sam Levinson says the ending was meant to feel honest

After the episode aired, series creator Sam Levinson addressed Rue’s death in a post-finale segment. He said the choice “felt like an honest ending” because “people like Rue don’t make it,” given the severity of her addiction.

It is a bleak conclusion for the show’s central character, but hardly out of step with the series’ long-running fixation on addiction, self-destruction, and the consequences that do not politely wait for someone to become emotionally ready.

The finale followed another major character death

Rue’s death came one week after another major turn for the HBO drama. In the previous episode, Jacob Elordi’s character Nate Jacobs was killed off. That same episode also drew attention for a graphic sex scene involving Sydney Sweeney’s Cassie Howard and Dylan Reid, played by Homer Gere, the son of Richard Gere.

On Monday, Levinson announced that the episode was not just the end of Season 3, but the end of the series altogether. So yes, the finale really did close the door with Rue’s death, Nate already gone, and the show’s final stretch still doing what Euphoria has always done best: making sure nobody leaves the room feeling relaxed.
