An Eric Clapton concert in Madrid ended earlier than expected after the guitarist was hit by an object thrown from the audience, according to fan-recorded video from the May 7 show at Movistar Arena.
The footage shows Clapton walking across the stage when an item, which appeared to be a vinyl record, struck him. He paused briefly after the impact and looked startled. Throwing a record at a musician is, for the avoidance of doubt, not a standard request format.
What happened on stage in Madrid
Clapton, 81, had just finished performing “Cocaine” when the object was thrown, according to video shared by fans. The clip circulated widely after the show.
Guitar World reported that Clapton did not return to perform “Before You Accuse Me,” the encore he had played at other stops on the European leg of the tour. That made the Madrid concert shorter than recent comparable shows.
There was no immediate indication that Clapton was injured. He went on to perform in Barcelona on May 10, three days after the Madrid incident.
Representatives for Clapton declined to comment when contacted by Page Six.
Where the tour goes next
The European leg of Clapton’s 2026 tour began in April. After the Spain dates, the schedule was set to continue with three concerts in Germany between May 13 and May 17.
Clapton is also scheduled to play a one-off show in the United Kingdom in August. His tour is then due to move to the United States, with dates listed between September 6 and September 27.
The Madrid incident did not appear to alter the publicly reported tour schedule. As ever with live performances, that is the practical question after a disruption: not whether the clip went viral, but whether anyone was hurt and whether the tour can continue.
