An Earth, Wind & Fire concert was postponed at San Francisco’s Chase Center on Thursday night after a medical emergency involving someone in the band. The person was not identified, leaving both their condition and the status of the remaining tour dates uncertain.
The group had been scheduled to perform with Lionel Richie on August 6 as part of their 26-city co-headlining tour. In a statement posted on Instagram, Earth, Wind & Fire said the show could not proceed and would be rescheduled, with a new date to be announced.
“We sincerely apologize for the unexpected change and appreciate everyone’s understanding,” the band said.
What happened at Chase Center?
TMZ reported that San Francisco Fire Department spokesperson Mariano Elias described the emergency as a “cardiac incident.” According to Elias, a fire engine and private ambulance responded to Chase Center, and one person was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.
The patient’s identity was not disclosed. Earth, Wind & Fire’s representatives provided no further information beyond the band’s statement.
The Bay Area Telegraph separately confirmed that the concert was postponed because of a medical emergency within the group. However, no accessible local report independently corroborated the more specific details about a cardiac event, ambulance transport or critical condition.
As of Friday morning, neither the band nor the venue had issued a health update or announced revised ticket arrangements. Chase Center’s event page was still displaying the original August 6 date and 7:30 p.m. start time, which is not especially useful once that time has already passed.
Which band member was affected?
There is no confirmed answer. Earth, Wind & Fire did not say whether the emergency involved a performer, touring musician or another member of its traveling party.

Founder Maurice White, who remains central to the band’s history, died in 2016 and was not part of the current touring lineup.
Earth, Wind & Fire has sold more than 100 million albums, won nine Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2000. Its current lineup continues to tour a catalog that includes “September,” “Shining Star” and “Let’s Groove.”
Without an identification or direct medical update, any attempt to name the patient would be speculation. The available reporting establishes that an emergency occurred and the show was postponed. The details beyond that remain limited.
Will the tour continue in Palm Desert?
The next scheduled concert was set for Saturday, August 8, at Acrisure Arena in Palm Desert. As of Friday morning, the performance remained listed by both the arena and Lionel Richie’s official site, but neither had confirmed whether it would go ahead.
The joint tour was scheduled to finish on August 14 in Austin. Any disruption could therefore affect several dates near the end of the run, although no additional postponements had been announced.
This is the second medical interruption on the same tour. On June 24, Richie shortened a performance at Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul after telling the audience he felt “dizzy” and “strange.” He sat on a stage platform while performing “Dancing on the Ceiling” and later postponed two concerts.
Earth, Wind & Fire drummer John Paris told the Minnesota Star Tribune that Richie had appeared “a little dehydrated.” Richie returned when the tour resumed in Pittsburgh on June 30 and later described the Pittsburgh and Detroit shows as “an absolute joy.”
The two incidents involved different circumstances, and there is no evidence connecting them. Still, they underline the practical uncertainty that follows any health emergency on a large touring production: the medical issue comes first, while schedules, venues and ticket plans wait for information that may not arrive immediately.
