Dua Lipa sues Samsung in a California legal fight that turns on a familiar modern question: when does a celebrity image become an endorsement? The 30-year-old pop star is seeking $15 million, about £11 million, after alleging the tech company used her photo on cardboard television boxes without permission as part of what her filing describes as a “mass marketing campaign.”
What the lawsuit says Samsung did
According to court filings, the image appeared on packaging for Samsung’s Crystal 43-inch ultra-high-definition television sets. The boxes were used to promote the XITE Hits music channel, with Lipa’s face shown as part of the product presentation.
The complaint says the “Houdini” singer had “no say, control, or input whatsoever” over the use of her photograph. It adds: “Ms Lipa did not allow and would not have allowed this use.”
That wording is doing a lot of work. The claim is not simply that a picture appeared somewhere by accident. Lipa’s team argues her image was used in a commercial setting, on packaging designed to help sell televisions. Packaging, famously, is not usually a place where companies put things for no reason.
Why the photo is central to the case
The photograph at the center of the dispute was taken backstage during Lipa’s appearance at Austin City Limits Festival in 2024. She claims she owns the copyright to the image.
Her filing says she only discovered the picture had been used after the televisions were already on sale. Her legal team also accuses Samsung of being “dismissive and callous” when asked to stop using the photograph.
The lawsuit seeks damages of $15 million, which is roughly £11 million. For a global pop star, the issue is not only whether a single image appeared on a box. It is whether a brand can benefit from the commercial value of her face without paying for, or receiving, permission.
Fans thought the box meant something
Lipa’s team also points to social media comments from fans who appeared to interpret the packaging as some kind of endorsement. That matters because celebrity approval, real or implied, can move products.
The complaint includes posts from users who said the image influenced their interest in buying the TV. One wrote on X: “I wasn’t even planning on buying a TV but I saw the box so I decided to get it.”
Another said: “I’d get that TV just because Dua Lipa is on it. That’s how obsessed I am. That’s how much I love her.” A third added: “Just put a picture of Dua Lipa on it.”
Those comments are being used to support the argument that Samsung benefited from the impression that Lipa had backed the product, even if no formal endorsement deal existed.
Why California could matter
Peter Vaughan, Associate Professor at Nottingham Law School, told that it was “not surprising” Lipa had chosen to take action in California, where image rights and the ability to commercialise a person’s likeness have stronger protection than in the United Kingdom.
He said UK protection is “much more fragmented and arguably a little ‘behind the times’.”
Vaughan added that Samsung “may look to argue that rather than being seen as endorsement, the image of Dua Lipa is simply what was on the home screen of a TV at the time.”
Still, he noted that companies make deliberate choices about packaging. “Companies carefully consider every element of packaging and a decision seems to have been made to use this particular image; Samsung would likely have to explain why this was not because it featured Dua Lipa,” he said.
He also pointed to the wider value of celebrity marketing: “Celebrity endorsements are a key part of any marketing strategy and attaching a product to a celebrity sells; a trend which we all know that influencers have exploited to their advantage.”
Vaughan said public cases involving stars of Lipa’s profile may help others understand that their image has commercial value and can be worth protecting.
What else is happening for Dua Lipa
Away from the courtroom, Lipa is also reportedly preparing to marry actor Callum Turner this summer. The couple got engaged in June 2025.
Their wedding celebrations are rumoured to be taking place in Palermo, Sicily, with reports suggesting a star-studded ceremony could happen between 5 and 7 September.
