Kendall Jenner has finally addressed the long-running rumours that she and Cara Delevingne were once romantically involved — although the way she chose to deny them may have given the internet considerably more material to work with.

In the trailer for season eight of The Kardashians, Kendall directly rejected the idea that she and her longtime friend had ever had a romantic relationship.

Then came the qualification.

“I have nothing against having sex with Cara,” Kendall said.

It is a remarkably efficient way of denying a rumour while simultaneously ensuring nobody stops discussing it.

Kendall Jenner denies a romance with Cara Delevingne

Speculation surrounding Kendall Jenner and Cara Delevingne is hardly new. The pair have been close friends for more than a decade, and their friendship has repeatedly prompted online theories that there might have been something more between them.

Kendall's latest comments provide a fairly straightforward answer to the central question: according to her, the two women have not had a romantic relationship.

Her follow-up remark, however, is considerably less straightforward.

By saying she has “nothing against” the possibility of having sex with Cara, Kendall separated what she says actually happened from what she might theoretically be open to. That distinction is important, even if it is unlikely to satisfy an internet that has spent years examining their friendship for evidence of something more.

Her previous comments add some context

Kendall has previously said that she does not consider herself gay, while also describing herself as someone who remains open to new experiences in life.

Those comments provide useful context for her latest answer. She is not confirming that anything sexual or romantic happened with Cara; the information available here supports the opposite conclusion, because Kendall explicitly denies a romantic relationship.

What she appears unwilling to do is frame that denial as a broader rejection of the possibility itself.

That nuance is likely to matter when the clip begins circulating beyond the trailer. Celebrity rumours tend to thrive on ambiguity, and Kendall has managed to provide both a denial and a sentence almost perfectly designed to be removed from its surrounding context.

Why the Cara rumours have lasted so long

Kendall and Cara's friendship stretches back more than a decade, giving fans plenty of time to speculate about the nature of their relationship.

But longevity of speculation is not evidence that the speculation is true. Based on the information currently available, there is no basis here for presenting the pair as having had a romantic or sexual relationship.

Kendall's own statement is the clearest piece of information: she says there was no romance.

Everything beyond that, including attempts to interpret what her latest comment might reveal about her sexuality or private life, would go further than the evidence provided.

The denial may only give the rumour another life

In my view, the interesting part of Kendall's answer is not whether it secretly confirms something, it doesn't, but how casually she refuses to make her denial more definitive than necessary. She could have dismissed the entire subject with a simple no. Instead, she rejected the historical claim while leaving the hypothetical possibility untouched. That makes for a more candid answer, but also a far more combustible one.

The distinction is simple enough: Kendall says she and Cara were never romantically involved, while also saying she would have no objection to having sex with her.

Those two statements are perfectly capable of existing together.

Whether the internet will allow them to do so peacefully is another matter.
