Dave Grohl and Jordyn Blum attended the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards together, two years after the Foo Fighters frontman revealed that he had fathered a child outside their marriage. It marked another public appearance for the couple as they continue rebuilding their relationship under the particularly discreet conditions of celebrity life.

Grohl and Blum, who have been married for more than 20 years, coordinated in black for the ceremony. He wore black trousers and a matching turtleneck beneath a leather jacket. Blum chose a black dress with a bubble skirt, paired with black heels and no jewellery.

The couple share three daughters: Violet Grohl, 20, Harper Grohl, 17, and Ophelia Grohl, 12.

Why Nirvana received the VMAs’ highest honour

The evening was not solely a date night. Grohl attended as one of the surviving members of Nirvana, alongside bassist Krist Novoselic and touring guitarist Pat Smear. The group received the Video Vanguard Award, the ceremony’s highest honour.

Grohl played drums during Nirvana’s most commercially successful period, while Smear joined the group as a touring musician in 1993. During their acceptance speech, the musicians honoured Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, who died by suicide in 1994 at the age of 27.

“Kurt was one of one,” Novoselic said. “None of us could imagine that our band, our sound, and our aesthetic would mean so much to so many people. But ultimately the music had a life of its own. It charted its own course.”

Novoselic said the band still connects with listeners because people remain “hungry for authenticity, for something real, something uncompromising”. He added that Nirvana’s message allowed people to “come as you are”.

“Kurt would love that legacy,” he said.

What happened after Grohl’s 2024 disclosure

The 2026 ceremony was the fourth red-carpet event Grohl and Blum had attended together since September 2024, when he publicly announced that he had welcomed a daughter outside his marriage.

At the time, Grohl said he intended to be “a loving and supportive parent” to the child. He also said he was working to regain the trust of Blum and their daughters and to “earn their forgiveness”. He did not publicly identify the child’s mother.

Since then, Grohl and Blum have gradually resumed appearing together at public events. Their VMAs arrival offered another indication that they remain together, although a coordinated wardrobe can only communicate so much about a marriage.

Neither Grohl nor Blum gave a fresh public statement about their relationship at the awards ceremony.

Grohl says therapy remains an ongoing process

In March 2026, Grohl said he had been attending therapy six times a week for 70 weeks. Speaking to The Guardian, the musician described the work as part of a broader reassessment of his life and behaviour.

“I have to be perfectly honest: Writing songs and writing lyrics about these things is sometimes enough,” he said. “As far as having a deeper, longer conversation about them, I still do reserve a lot of this for my own personal life, as impersonal and public as it may seem.”

Grohl added that he had reached a point where he needed “to stop and sit with myself and re-evaluate myself”.

“It’s an ongoing process,” he said.

At the VMAs, Grohl and Blum kept the focus on the ceremony, the Nirvana tribute and their carefully coordinated appearance. After two years of public scrutiny, the couple presented a united front without offering the public a detailed progress report, which is probably more than enough material for one blue carpet.
