China has taken back the title of world’s fastest supercomputer for the first time since 2018, despite US trade restrictions meant to slow its access to the most powerful computing hardware.
The new system, LineShine, has moved ahead of El Capitan to claim the top spot on the TOP500 ranking, the closely watched list that tracks the world’s most powerful supercomputers. The shift is notable not just because China is back at number one, but because it got there without using GPUs, the chips that usually do much of the heavy lifting in modern high-performance computing.
How LineShine reached number one
LineShine’s rise comes in a field still heavily shaped by US technology. American systems hold three of the top five spots on the TOP500 list, and US firms remain dominant in the advanced chips and components that power many elite machines.
China, however, has been operating under strict limits on what high-performance computing parts US companies can sell into the country. Rather than build around hard-to-get GPUs, LineShine uses a very different approach: a large number of more general-purpose processors.
The system is built with roughly 45,000 LX2 processors. Each processor has 304 cores running at 1.55GHz. Those chips are linked through LingQi, a specialized high-speed, low-latency network designed to keep the massive machine working as one coordinated system. Simple, elegant, and powered by roughly the computing equivalent of a small city’s wiring closet.
