In “11th Quarter,” Gerry breaks into the house Russ shares with Danny, played by Frankie A. Rodriguez. He attacks Danny and steals the prosthetics Russ uses to become Chad. The finale opens with the basement ransacked and Danny bleeding from the face, though he is alive.
Russ meets Gerry in an otherwise empty cinema showing “Edward Scissorhands.” Gerry now has physical evidence of the disguise and enough leverage to dictate terms. The episode initially hides their agreement, cutting instead to Russ meeting Danny at a diner.
Ricky joins them while still furious that Russ concealed Coach Hudson’s medical situation. Hudson, played by Steve Zahn, had not been cleared to return to the sidelines, despite telling Ricky and the team otherwise. Russ claims Gerry only wanted money and says the matter has been handled. Neither Danny nor Ricky believes that convenient summary.
Why Russ deliberately plays badly against Texas
The Catfish enter their final regular-season game needing to beat the Texas Longhorns to reach the College Football Playoff. Chad immediately throws an interception and continues making costly mistakes. By halftime, South Georgia is losing badly.
Danny then finds a page in Russ’s room listing the exact negative plays Chad is supposed to make. The document exposes Gerry’s real demand: Russ must produce a “historically bad game” so Gerry can collect $200,000 from wagers placed against him.
Gerry’s goal is not purely financial. He wants the public to despise Chad as much as it despises him. He also orders Russ to accept responsibility for the 3D-printed gun planted in Gerry’s locker during the previous episode. In exchange, Gerry promises not to expose Chad as Russ Holliday.
The plan moves beyond ordinary blackmail into attempted game-fixing. It would also create a serious college-sports gambling problem. The National Collegiate Athletic Association prohibits student-athletes from betting on sports, a ban that remained in place after Division I schools withdrew a proposed rule change in November 2025. Gerry is trying to manipulate both the result and individual performance for a payout, which is generally frowned upon outside particularly bleak crime dramas.
How Ricky helps Chad beat Gerry’s conditions
Once Ricky understands the scheme, she finds Russ alone and tells him she has accepted a coaching job at Syracuse. She is due to start the next day, making the Texas game their final one together.
Ricky has also studied Russ’s old Oregon footage. That gives her a way to design trick plays around Gerry’s detailed restrictions without technically breaking them. Acting as Russ’s on-field interpreter, she helps the Catfish close the gap and repeatedly reach the end zone.
Gerry watches from a stadium bathroom, becoming increasingly furious as the comeback develops. His instructions covered what Russ could not do, but Ricky finds options he failed to anticipate. The loopholes work until a late penalty wipes out what appears to be the winning touchdown.
With two seconds remaining, Russ faces a simple choice. He can obey Gerry and protect his identity, or ignore the deal and give South Georgia a chance to win.
Coach Hudson tells Chad that he is proud of him and grateful for their season together. He adds that Chad’s late mother would have been proud too. Russ then abandons Gerry’s restrictions, runs for the touchdown and wins the game.
The result keeps the Catfish’s championship ambitions alive. It also costs Gerry his expected $200,000 and removes any reason for him to keep quiet.
What happens to Gerry after the game
Gerry storms onto the field and charges toward Russ and Ricky. Before he can reach them, a security guard working for Tricia Yeager, played by Wynn Everett, punches him unconscious.
The guard carries Gerry’s limp body away, but the episode does not show Gerry being killed or permanently removed. His fate remains open. Any interpretation that Tricia has definitively eliminated him goes further than what appears on screen.
As he leaves, the guard tells Chad that his name has been acquired by Yeager Family Foods. He then notices that the quarterback’s facial prosthetic has slipped and addresses him as “Mr. Holliday.”
Danny had revealed Russ’s identity to Tricia, the influential head of the Catfish boosters, because he needed help containing Gerry. Tricia agrees to protect the secret, though her terms are not generous. She orders Russ and Danny to move onto her ranch so she can keep them “safe” and make sure Russ remains Chad “for a long time.”
That arrangement changes the threat around Russ. Gerry used the secret to rig one game and secure a betting payout. Tricia sees the Chad Powers identity as a valuable asset that she can manage. Russ escapes one blackmailer only to acquire a corporate supervisor with private security and housing requirements.
Does Coach Hudson discover Chad’s identity?
Elsewhere on the field, Hudson tells assistant coaches Coach Byrd, played by Quentin Plair, and Coach Dobbs, played by Clayne Crawford, that this will be his final season as head coach. He wants them and Ricky to advance within the program, unaware that Ricky has already accepted the Syracuse position.
In the locker room, Ricky repairs Russ’s damaged prosthetic. She becomes emotional over their impending separation, and Russ tells her that he loves her. They kiss for the first time, then begin making out as Ricky removes more of the disguise.
Coach Hudson suddenly opens the door. Russ turns away with part of the mask displaced, and the episode cuts to black before showing what Hudson understood.
The interruption leaves several possibilities open. Hudson may have seen enough to identify Russ, noticed only that something was wrong with Chad’s face, or missed the decisive detail entirely. His heart condition makes the potential revelation more serious than an awkward locker-room explanation.
Ricky also faces a professional problem. She has accepted a new job while beginning a relationship with someone publicly understood to be a player she coaches. Russ may not truly be Chad Powers, but that distinction is difficult to place on an employment form.
Why the disguise has become more than a mask
The series began with a September 2022 segment from Eli Manning’s “Eli’s Places,” in which Manning wore prosthetics and tried out at Penn State under the name Chad Powers. The television version turned that stunt into a longer question about whether Russ’s disguise is hiding him or allowing him to behave more honestly.
The Guardian critic Jack Seale described the second season as “sweet,” “lovable” and “disarmingly unique,” while calling Gerry “dangerously disgruntled.” Seale also argued that Russ’s confident public persona had functioned as a mask even before he put on the prosthetics. RogerEbert.com similarly identified Gerry’s envy and suspicion as the season’s main conflict.
By the finale, Russ’s two identities are no longer his alone to control. Ricky knows, Danny knows, Tricia knows, and Tricia’s security guard knows. Gerry has the stolen evidence, while Hudson may have seen the physical disguise coming apart.
A possible third season would therefore have several unresolved questions:
- Whether Hudson recognized Russ in the locker room
- What Tricia plans to do with Gerry
- Whether Ricky still leaves for Syracuse
- How Russ and Danny cope with living under Tricia’s supervision
- Whether the Catfish reach and win the national championship
Hulu has not renewed the series for Season 3. Until it does, Gerry is unconscious rather than confirmed gone, Hudson’s knowledge remains deliberately unclear, and Russ has won the game while losing even more control of Chad Powers.
