The latest Carrot Top hospital update contains encouraging news: the 61-year-old comedian is awake, breathing on his own and continuing to improve after he was admitted to a Las Vegas hospital on September 18.

How is Carrot Top doing in hospital?

Carrot Top, whose real name is Scott Thompson, remains hospitalized and under close medical supervision, his representative told TMZ in a statement issued September 20.

“Scott remains hospitalized and under close medical care,” the representative said. “He is now awake, breathing on his own and continuing to improve, surrounded by his family and those closest to him.”

Thompson has also been joking with the medical staff caring for him, suggesting that his professional instincts remain inconveniently active even from a hospital bed. His representative said he has been reading the many messages sent by fans since news of his hospitalization emerged.

Some supporters shared personal stories about how his comedy helped them through difficult periods. According to the statement, those messages are now offering the comedian some support in return.

“Hearing those stories and feeling that support has meant a great deal to him during his recovery,” the representative said. “Scott and his family remain deeply grateful for the extraordinary kindness and continue to ask that his privacy be respected.”

No details about the illness or medical issue that led to his hospitalization have been disclosed.

What happens to his Luxor shows?

Thompson has performed his nightly comedy show at the Luxor Hotel and Casino since 2005, making him a fixture of the Las Vegas entertainment schedule. Following his hospitalization, performances planned from September 18 through September 22 were canceled.

His next show remained listed for September 23 on the Luxor’s website, although no confirmation was provided that he would be well enough to return by then. A calendar entry, as ever, is not a medical opinion.

The resort expressed relief at the news that he was recovering.

“Scott is a beloved member of the Luxor and MGM Resorts family, and we are relieved to hear that he is recovering,” the Luxor Hotel and Casino told KLAS on September 19. “We are thinking of him and wish him strength as he receives the care and support he needs.”

Alongside his long-running residency, Thompson has appeared in films including Dennis the Menace Strikes Again and Chairman of the Board. He is best known for prop-heavy comedy, high-energy performances and a hairstyle that has maintained impressive structural consistency.

Why Carrot Top keeps testing new material

Thompson discussed his approach to stand-up during a 2023 appearance on the Whiskey Ginger podcast. He said experience had made him more confident, but he still enjoyed writing and testing several new jokes each night, even when they failed in front of an audience.

“I think you learn the craft a little bit more, you get a little more confident,” he said. “I love writing. I love trying new jokes every night.”

He added that he disliked seeing comedians repeat the same material indefinitely without attempting anything creative. For Thompson, a joke performing badly is part of improving as a comic, an occupational hazard usually faced under stage lights rather than hospital fluorescents.

For now, his family has asked for privacy while he continues receiving treatment. His representative has not announced a discharge date or provided a timetable for his return to the Luxor stage.
