What was Hickerson’s domestic-violence history?
In 2021, Hickerson pleaded no contest to two felony domestic-violence charges involving Panettiere. He served 13 days of a 45-day jail sentence, received four years of probation and was ordered to complete 52 domestic-violence classes.
Judge Olivia Rosales rejected his second effort to clear or reduce those convictions on August 13, 2026. Panettiere died three days later.
The couple had maintained an on-and-off relationship. In her memoir, Panettiere wrote that the abuse had felt less frightening to her than being alone, a description that gave grim context to why the relationship continued despite the convictions.
After her death, Panettiere’s mother, Lesley Vogel, told NBC: “This person in her life that we have been trying to get rid of … was Brian Hickerson.”
Hickerson’s attorney, Sloan Ellis, urged the public to allow the investigation to proceed and pointed to the authorities’ statement that they had found no initial evidence of foul play.
What is known about Hayden Panettiere’s death?

Authorities said they found no obvious trauma and no early indication of foul play. Panettiere’s cause and manner of death remain pending while investigators await toxicology results and other studies, a process Greenville officials said could take up to eight weeks.
Zach Hickerson told TMZ that Brian had tried to revive Panettiere with Narcan, a medication used to reverse opioid overdoses. The police report mentions medications belonging to Panettiere but does not mention Narcan, so that detail currently rests on Zach’s account rather than the official record.
The newly surfaced bar video does not establish anything about Panettiere’s death a year later. It does, though, document Hickerson’s condition during one of several episodes now receiving renewed scrutiny. It also shows why separating allegations, arrests and actual case outcomes is more useful than combining them into one lurid timeline, however convenient that may be.
