Bowie80 will mark what would have been David Bowie’s 80th birthday with exhibitions, concerts, special releases, fashion collaborations and immersive experiences beginning in November 2026 and continuing throughout 2027. His estate announced the programme on Monday, with further projects still to come.

The scale is fitting for an artist who treated reinvention as routine maintenance. Bowie, born David Jones in London on January 8, 1947, became one of rock’s most influential musicians and a defining figure across music, fashion and visual culture. He shared a birthday with Elvis Presley, who was born 12 years earlier.

Bowie died from cancer on January 10, 2016, two days after his 69th birthday and the release of his final album, Blackstar. Since then, his estate has issued a series of reissues that Bowie helped plan before his death.

What will happen at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame?

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland will open a dedicated retail pop-up in mid-November, providing the anniversary with the traditional museum essentials: history, education and merchandise.

During Bowie’s birthday weekend, the institution will also host fan activities including:

  • Bowie-themed educational presentations
  • Trivia sessions and music programming
  • Photo opportunities
  • A photography exhibition featuring previously unpublished or undisplayed work

The Rock Hall plans to announce full exhibition and programming details in the coming months.

Nordstrom, meanwhile, has signed an exclusive partnership with the Bowie estate focused on his lasting influence on fashion. Immersive shops will open at the retailer’s flagship locations in Seattle, New York and Chicago.

Those spaces will carry exclusive and limited-edition clothing and accessories created for the campaign. Participating designers and brands include Undercover, Marc Jacobs, Paul Smith and AllSaints, with more names expected. Bowie’s wardrobe was never exactly background decoration, so a department-store tribute is not the most surprising development here.

Which exhibitions are planned for 2027?

Morrison Hotel Gallery will present Strange Fascination, a major photography exhibition opening in early February 2027 in New York City and West Hollywood.

The show will combine career-defining images with previously unreleased photographs drawn from the archives of Morrison Hotel Gallery and the David Bowie estate. Organisers will divide the exhibition into six eras, charting the identities and reinventions that shaped Bowie’s influence on music, fashion, art and popular culture. More information is due in January.

The immersive production David Bowie: You’re Not Alone will also expand beyond London. The show opened at Lightroom in 2026 and uses large-format screens with high-fidelity sound to trace Bowie’s life and career.

In 2027, it will travel to Manchester and Brighton before reaching its first venue in continental Europe, Port des Lumières in Hamburg.

How will Bowie’s music return to the stage?

A new live symphonic production titled BOWIE (breaking) GLASS will receive its world premiere in Copenhagen in spring 2027.

Schirmer Theatrical developed the official concert experience with Østre Gasværk Teater. The production will place Bowie’s original recordings alongside live singers, musicians and an orchestra, creating what organisers describe as “a new musical and visual dialogue” with composer Philip Glass.

The connection is well established. Glass composed symphonies inspired by Bowie’s Berlin-era albums, making the collaboration less an anniversary novelty and more a continuation of a musical relationship spanning decades.

Bowie’s recorded voice will remain central to the performance rather than being replaced entirely by new vocalists. Further details about dates, performers and future venues have not yet been announced.

Where will items from Bowie’s archive appear?

The Victoria and Albert Museum will take material from Bowie’s vast archive around the United Kingdom in David Bowie: On Tour.

The collection contains about 90,000 items documenting his career and creative process. The touring display will begin in Dundee before moving to Blackpool in 2027. Additional venues will follow in 2028 and 2029.

The objects form part of the archive acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum, offering audiences outside London a closer look at Bowie’s costumes, creative materials and other artefacts. Specific items for each stop have not yet been confirmed.

The multi-year schedule also ensures the birthday celebration will not end abruptly when 2027 does. Apparently, even an 80th anniversary can have an extended tour.

What Bowie80 merchandise is being released?

Perryscope Productions, Bowie’s longtime merchandising representative, is launching exclusive anniversary products immediately. Existing and new licensees will introduce additional clothing and accessories throughout the celebration year.

Brands involved include Phix, Rockoff, Rowdy Sprout, Roots of Fight, Stoned Immaculate and Girl Skateboards. The range will cover both general Bowie designs and products carrying the anniversary branding.

The estate says more events, releases, collaborations and experiences will be announced in the coming months. Full details of the initial programme and future additions will be published through the official anniversary platform.
