Billy Joel is putting his motorcycle collection up for auction, giving enthusiasts a chance to own one of the singer’s prized machines. The sale will take place during Gooding Christie’s inaugural auction at Rétromobile New York in November.

The collection is nearly as extensive as Joel’s catalogue, although considerably less practical for playing Madison Square Garden. More than 70 lots will be offered from the musician’s long-assembled fleet.

Which motorcycles are included in the sale?

Among the headline models announced for the auction are:

  • A 1978 Triumph T140 Bonneville
  • A 1982 Ducati Mike Hailwood 900
  • A 1975 Ducati 750 Sport

Joel has long been recognised as a serious motorcycle enthusiast, rather than a celebrity who bought two expensive bikes and called it a collection. His machines have become a notable part of his public life alongside the music career that made him one of New York’s most closely associated performers.

Where will the auction proceeds go?

Money raised through the sale will benefit The Joel Foundation, the singer’s charitable organisation.

Gooding Christie’s president David Gooding said the auction house was “truly honored” to present the collection in New York City, citing Joel’s strong connection to the city and his legacy as one of its best-known musicians.

“Billy Joel is one of the most recognized motorcycle enthusiasts in the world,” Gooding said, adding that the company was thrilled to bring his collection to Rétromobile New York in November.

The auction marks a substantial clear-out for Joel, though with more than 70 lots involved, this is less a garage tidy-up and more a controlled evacuation.
