Ben Affleck’s parents’ deaths just two months apart forced the actor to reconsider his childhood, his own mortality and how he wants to use the time he has left. His father, Timothy Byers Affleck, died in April 2026, followed by his mother, Christopher Anne “Chris” Boldt, in June.
“It’s a big year of life,” Affleck, 54, told GQ in an interview published Tuesday. He said the losses had changed how he viewed his upbringing and made him appreciate both parents in different ways.
“That’s a lot, man,” he said. “You appreciate your parents in different ways, and you think about your own mortality and your own life and your own children and what you want to do with it.”
Affleck added that the “very fleeting nature” of life had become impossible to ignore. The idea that adulthood would eventually provide a complete set of answers had also faded. Age, rather inconveniently, did not arrive with an instruction manual.
“Often the end of life isn’t full of wisdom and resolve,” he said. “Stuff you haven’t fixed in life stays unfixed.”
How the losses changed Affleck’s priorities
The Gone Girl actor said confronting that reality made him ask how he wanted to spend the rest of his life.
“You face that stuff and it makes you think, ‘Okay, how do I want to spend the rest of this time?’ Because you realize there’s not all that much of it,” he said.
Affleck did not outline a grand plan, but he has recently made clear that his three children remain his main priority. He shares Violet, 20, Seraphina, 17, and Sam, 14, with his former wife, Jennifer Garner.
He spoke especially warmly about his mother, describing Chris as “pretty extraordinary and brave.” She died at 83 after battling pancreatic cancer.
“I mean, she’s an amazing woman and her death really did cause me to even more deeply and fully appreciate her and her life,” Affleck said.
He also described both parents as fortunate to have lived long lives, “longer than one’s expectation.” Still, his mother’s own assessment captured how even eight decades can seem surprisingly brief.
“My mom said to me at one point, ‘I had a great life and I have no regrets, but I thought 83 years would feel like longer,’” he recalled.
When were the deaths made public?
Timothy died in April at age 76, but the family kept his death private for several months. Affleck’s younger brother, actor and director Casey Affleck, publicly disclosed the loss in September during the 2026 Venice International Film Festival.
While discussing his film Company, Casey said the project was dedicated to both parents.
“It’s dedicated to my parents because I lost both my mom and my dad this year, and they were very important to me,” he told reporters.
Timothy’s cause of death has not been disclosed. Chris died two months later following pancreatic cancer.
The couple married in the early 1970s and separated in 1984, before Ben and Casey reached their teenage years. Their deaths within the same year left both sons reflecting publicly on their influence, though Ben’s comments focused less on tidy lessons than on the uncomfortable absence of them. Some problems remain unresolved, time remains limited, and grief does not bother arranging itself into a reassuring conclusion.
