The Baywatch reboot has released a new trailer ahead of its January 2027 premiere on Fox, although “reboot” only tells half the story. Stephen Amell stars as an adult Hobie Buchannon, succeeding his father, Mitch Buchannon, and leading a new crew that includes his estranged daughter. The red swimsuits, dangerous rescues and slow-motion beach runs remain intact. Some institutions are apparently too important to modernise.

Fox released the action-heavy preview on October 13. It opens with a distressed plane colliding with two paragliders over the ocean and dragging them beneath the water. Hobie and his team immediately race into action, providing emergency assistance while also finding time for the franchise’s required display of extremely defined abdominal muscles.

How does the new series continue the original story?

Fox has positioned the show as a revival, but TVLine described it more precisely as a direct continuation. Hobie is the son of David Hasselhoff’s Mitch Buchannon, which places the new series within the original continuity rather than starting again with entirely unrelated characters.

The central family conflict begins when Hobie’s long-lost daughter, Charlie Vale, arrives after decades of estrangement. Jessica Belkin plays Charlie, who insists she wants neither money nor an instant relationship.

“Don’t worry, I’m not looking for a father or money,” she tells Hobie in the trailer. “Just a job.”

Hobie admits that he has dreamed of reconnecting with his daughter, but he worries about putting her in danger. Charlie’s response is suitably direct: “Saving people is my purpose.”

Belkin has said Charlie’s arrival also causes resentment among the other lifeguards because of the “nepo aspect” of securing a place on her father’s team. Evidently, even beach rescues now come with workplace politics.

Who has joined the new Baywatch cast?

Amell leads an ensemble drawn from television, modelling, athletics and social media. The new lifeguard team includes:

  • Jessica Belkin as Charlie Vale
  • Hassie Harrison as Nat
  • Shay Mitchell as Trina
  • Thaddeus LaGrone as Brad
  • Noah Beck as Luke
  • Brooks Nader as Selene
  • Livvy Dunne as Grace

The series marks Dunne’s acting debut. Her casting, alongside model Nader and social-media personality Beck, shows Fox is not relying exclusively on conventional television actors to introduce the franchise to a younger audience.

Dunne has stressed that the revival replaces the original ensemble with a new generation. Nader, meanwhile, told TV Insider that Carmen Electra was excited about the production and said the cast intended to honour the performers who made the earlier show famous.

Amell has compared the series to “a superhero show,” which is not a radical description of a drama about unusually photogenic people sprinting toward danger and rescuing civilians every week.

Which original Baywatch actors are returning?

The October trailer confirms David Chokachi’s return as Cody Madison, but he is not the only familiar lifeguard reportedly heading back to the beach.

Variety reported that Erika Eleniak will reprise her role as Shauni McClain. CinemaBlend also named Kelly Packard as April Giminski and Michael Bergin as J.D. Darius among the returning cast members.

Those appearances reinforce the idea that Fox is making a multigenerational sequel rather than erasing the earlier series. Hobie connects the story directly to Mitch, Charlie extends the Buchannon family line, and the returning lifeguards provide continuity beyond one famous surname.

The trailer gives Hobie the traditional leadership speech. “To be a Baywatch lifeguard you have to be the best of the best,” he tells the team, “because it’s our responsibility to protect the people of this city, no matter the cost.”

The job also appears to include romances, bikinis and carefully timed running sequences, but the rescue mission remains the official priority.

When will the new Baywatch series premiere?

Fox has ordered 12 episodes directly to series for its 2026-27 television season. The network has confirmed a January 2027 launch window, but it has not publicly announced a specific premiere date. An unverified social-media post attributed to Chokachi suggested January 31, though that date remains unconfirmed.

The October video is also not technically the public’s first glimpse of the project. Fox released an earlier teaser in July, and TMZ published cast photographs on July 1. The latest trailer is the most extensive preview so far, rather than the first sighting of red swimwear in the wild.

Fox Entertainment and Fremantle are producing the series. Production took place at Venice Beach and on the Fox studio lot. Early reports named Matt Nix as showrunner and McG as pilot director, while later coverage identified Lara Olsen as showrunner, indicating a behind-the-scenes change during development.

Fox network president Michael Thorn has called the series a “huge, huge priority” and said a midseason premiere offered it the strongest chance of success.

Why is Fox bringing Baywatch back now?

The original Baywatch began in 1989 and grew into one of television’s biggest international exports. It eventually aired in more than 200 countries and reportedly attracted over one billion weekly viewers at its peak.

That scale makes the revival understandable. Fox gets a globally recognised title, a built-in visual identity and enough legacy characters to attract older viewers. The younger cast, including several performers with large online followings, gives the network a route to audiences who may know the red swimsuit better than any actual episode.

Whether that combination produces another worldwide phenomenon is less certain. For now, Fox is betting that family drama, large-scale rescues and slow-motion running still belong together. The January schedule will determine whether viewers agree.
