The 2022 film presented Bruce Wayne as an isolated, obsessive detective pursuing Paul Dano’s Riddler through a rain-soaked Gotham City. Its style combined crime thriller, mystery and psychological drama, leaving several plausible routes for the sequel. Reeves could expand the city’s organized-crime story after The Penguin, push further into horror or place greater emphasis on Bruce Wayne rather than his masked alter ego.
Colin Farrell provided slightly more texture, though not much more information. He called the script “dark,” “terrifying,” “psychologically weighty” and “full of feeling.” Farrell also described it as a “contemporary genre masterpiece,” which is high praise from an actor who appears in only two scenes and can therefore watch most of it without checking his own performance.
Why has the release date moved four times?
The sequel has occupied four places on Warner Bros.’ calendar:

DC originally announced the 2025 date in January 2023. Variety reported that Warner Bros. moved the film from October 2027 to February 2028 to give Reeves more time for post-production.
The delays inevitably raise expectations. The Batman reportedly cost about $200 million and earned $772.8 million worldwide, including $369.8 million in North America. It was also successful enough to produce HBO’s The Penguin, which continued Gotham’s criminal power struggle after the first film.
A gap of almost six years is unusually long for a direct sequel to a major superhero hit. It also means the follow-up must reconnect with audiences while justifying an extended production schedule. Pattinson’s description of a radical shift may help with that. At minimum, it offers something more interesting than promising the same film with an additional villain.
Is Sebastian Stan playing Harvey Dent?
No villain has been officially identified, and the reporting around Harvey Dent remains unsettled.
Variety confirmed that Sebastian Stan, Scarlett Johansson, Charles Dance, Brian Tyree Henry and Sebastian Koch have joined the cast, but did not identify their characters. TheWrap previously reported Stan as Harvey Dent, Johansson as Dent’s wife and Dance as Dent’s father.
That apparent certainty did not last. A quote said to confirm Stan as Harvey Dent was deleted by French newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche. TheWrap later cited two insiders who said Stan had been misquoted. His role therefore remains unconfirmed, despite widespread reports treating the casting as settled.
The known returning ensemble includes:

- Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon
- Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth
- Colin Farrell as Oz Cobb, also known as the Penguin
- Jayme Lawson as Mayor Bella Reál
- Gil Perez-Abraham as Officer Martinez
Johansson, Dance, Henry, Koch and Stan are confirmed cast members, but their roles remain officially undisclosed. Gotham apparently has confidentiality agreements stronger than its public institutions.
Where does this Batman fit within DC?
Reeves’ films do not belong to the connected DC Universe overseen by James Gunn and Peter Safran. The Batman and The Penguin form a separate continuity that Gunn has described as a Batman crime saga.
That keeps Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne apart from projects including Superman, Supergirl, Lanterns and Man of Tomorrow. DC also plans to introduce another Batman in The Brave and the Bold, although that project has not yet reached the screen.
The separation allows Reeves to maintain the grounded criminal world established in 2022 without accounting for the wider DC roster. It also means audiences will eventually have two live-action Batmen operating in different continuities, because superhero filmmaking has apparently decided that one billionaire vigilante requires multiple filing systems.
For Pattinson, the more immediate concern is physical. He told GQ that shooting fight scenes at age 40 feels “significantly harder” than it once did, although he described the work as fun and praised the sequel’s cast.
“It’s a marathon,” he said.
With the release set for 2028 and the plot still under close guard, that description applies to the audience as well.
