The Avengers: Doomsday trailer is finally out in public, which means Marvel fans no longer have to rely on CinemaCon whispers, blurry descriptions, or the ancient storytelling tradition of “trust me, it looked huge.” After being shown to attendees in April, the full preview has now been released, setting up one of the biggest gatherings the Marvel Cinematic Universe has attempted since Avengers: Endgame.
Marvel is setting the film up as the payoff to seven years of multiverse storytelling across three MCU phases. That is a lot of timelines, variants, cameos and cosmic paperwork, all now pointing toward one central threat: Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr. in his return to Marvel.
Doctor Doom arrives as Marvel’s next major threat
The trailer shows the MCU’s heroes gathering while Doctor Doom prepares to launch a war across the multiverse. Downey’s casting remains the sharpest hook here, because he is not returning as Tony Stark, the role that made him the face of the franchise for more than a decade.
Marvel has not fully explained how his Doctor Doom fits into the story. The apparent direction is that Doom may be a variant of Iron Man from another universe, though the studio is keeping the finer details locked away for now. He previously appeared briefly in the post-credits scene of Fantastic Four: First Steps, but his face was hidden.
That mystery gives the character a different emotional charge. Tony Stark died saving the world in Endgame, sacrificing himself to defeat Thanos. Bringing Downey back as a villain is not just stunt casting. It asks the audience to sit with a familiar face in a very unfamiliar role, which is exactly the kind of discomfort Marvel likes to package as an event.
Captain America returns and the Avengers regroup
One of the trailer’s biggest reveals is Chris Evans’ return as Steve Rogers, also known as Captain America. The preview shows Thor facing off against Doctor Doom and later reuniting with Rogers, marking Evans’ long-awaited return to the MCU after Endgame.
The return does not come out of nowhere. Disney previously released teaser previews tied to screenings of Avatar: Fire and Ash in late 2025 and early 2026, and the first of those confirmed that Evans would be back as Steve Rogers. It also revealed that Rogers now has a child, a detail that gives his return more than simple nostalgia value.
Chris Hemsworth’s Thor also gets a personal thread in the build-up. A second teaser showed Thor with his adopted daughter, Love, continuing the character’s story after Thor: Love and Thunder. For a film this crowded, those family details matter. They are the small emotional anchors in a movie that otherwise appears ready to throw several universes into a blender.
The X-Men officially cross into the MCU
The trailer also delivers on one of Marvel’s longest-running promises: the Fox-era X-Men characters are crossing into the Avengers’ world in a major way.
Among the returning mutant characters are:
- Patrick Stewart as Professor Xavier
- Ian McKellen as Magneto
- Rebecca Romijn as Mystique
- James Marsden as Cyclops
- Kelsey Grammer as Beast
- Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler
- Channing Tatum as Gambit
Tatum’s Gambit arrives after appearing in Deadpool and Wolverine, while the others bring back key faces from the earlier Fox films. A third Disney teaser had already shown Stewart’s Professor X, McKellen’s Magneto and Marsden’s Cyclops, giving audiences an early hint that the crossover would be more than a quick nod.
For longtime viewers, the X-Men’s arrival is not just a franchise merger. It is a generational handoff. Characters who once lived in a separate superhero universe are now being folded into the MCU’s biggest event structure, because apparently one continuity was too manageable.
Fantastic Four and Thunderbolts join the fight
The trailer also brings back the Fantastic Four and the Thunderbolts, two of the most recent teams added alongside the Avengers. Both groups are expected to help defend the multiverse as Doom’s threat expands.
The Fantastic Four roster includes Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, following their big-screen debut last year. The Thunderbolts lineup brings back Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, Hannah John-Kamen and Lewis Pullman.
A fourth teaser preview had already placed Letitia Wright’s Black Panther, Tenoch Huerta’s Namor and Winston Duke’s M’Baku in Wakanda, where they met Moss-Bachrach’s Thing. That detail suggests the film will not simply dump everyone in one place and call it a day. Marvel is pulling threads from Wakanda, the Fantastic Four, the Thunderbolts, the Avengers and the X-Men into one shared crisis.
The returning MCU cast is enormous. Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Danny Ramirez, Sebastian Stan, Paul Rudd, Tom Hiddleston, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Simu Liu and Tenoch Huerta are all among the familiar names back for Doomsday.
The Russo Brothers are back for Marvel’s next two-event plan
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to hit theaters on Dec. 18, with Avengers: Secret Wars set to follow one year later. The two films will be directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, who return after helming Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame and two Captain America films.
That matters because Endgame remains the MCU’s high-water mark, both emotionally and commercially. It became the second highest-grossing movie of all time and gave Marvel something rare in franchise filmmaking: a finale that felt like an actual ending.
Since then, the MCU has spent years expanding outward through the multiverse. Doomsday looks built to pull that sprawl back into one major confrontation. The trailer makes clear that Marvel is leaning on legacy, scale and a very loaded piece of casting to bring audiences back to the feeling of a shared event.
Whether it can carry the same emotional weight as Endgame is the real question. But the ingredients are now visible: returning Avengers, Fox’s X-Men, the Fantastic Four, the Thunderbolts, Captain America, and Robert Downey Jr. standing on the other side of the battlefield as Doctor Doom.
