Anne Hathaway’s pregnancy style became the main event at the Los Angeles premiere of The End of Oak Street on Sunday, August 9. The 43-year-old arrived in wide-leg jeans, heels and a dramatic satin top that exposed her bump, giving the internet a fresh opportunity to hold an emergency meeting about trousers.
The baby-blue, high-neck top featured red lining, a cropped front and a floor-length train. It was reported as a design by Prabal Gurung, while stylist Erin Walsh paired it with relaxed denim rather than the more predictable gown. The result was part eveningwear, part practical maternity dressing and entirely guaranteed to divide opinion.
Hathaway is expecting her third child with husband Adam Shulman. She announced the pregnancy on June 19, and neither has disclosed the baby’s sex or due date.
Why did the premiere outfit divide viewers?
Most of the criticism focused not on Hathaway showing her bump, but on the proportions of the outfit. A Reddit discussion posted after the premiere drew hundreds of reactions, with many commenters objecting to the combination of a voluminous train, cropped bodice and loose jeans. Others praised her for wearing denim while pregnant and refusing to treat a visible bump as something requiring strategic drapery.
The reaction was similarly split on X. One user wrote: “She is so beautiful and 99.9% of her outfits are IMPECCABLE but this makes me so uncomfy to look at.” Another defended the choice: “Low rise jeans at a major Hollywood world premiere while heavily pregnant? Anne Hathaway continues to be the ultimate trendsetter.”
There was nothing especially revealing about the look by current red carpet standards. Its apparent offence was combining formal and casual clothing while making pregnancy central to the silhouette. Celebrities are routinely encouraged to take fashion risks, provided those risks still resemble a conventional gown. Jeans, it seems, remain administratively complicated.
Denim has caused red carpet arguments before
Hollywood’s relationship with formal denim has never been calm. Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake’s matching all-denim outfits at the 2001 American Music Awards remain among the most recognisable celebrity looks of that era.
In 2022, Kanye West and Julia Fox made their red carpet debut as a couple during Paris Fashion Week, where Fox wore a cropped denim jacket with sculpted cone details. At the 2026 Met Gala, model Bhavitha Mandava took a more understated approach by pairing jeans with a polo shirt.
Hathaway’s outfit was considerably less theatrical than Fox’s, but it still challenged the unofficial rule that jeans belong almost everywhere except a major premiere. The satin train supplied the required drama, while the denim made the outfit look as though its wearer might still be able to sit down comfortably. A dangerous precedent, apparently.
The choice also fits Hathaway’s recent description of herself as a “tomboy” whose wardrobe has been shaped by raising two boys. She and Shulman are already parents to Jonathan, 10, and Jack, 6.

Speaking to People earlier in August, Hathaway said motherhood had changed how she dresses.
“I love that being a boy mom has really informed my fashion,” she said. “I have to always be able to go from a serious business meeting to, like, a basketball court. You have to be able to play pickup basketball at any point, in any outfit.”
She added that she dresses with the expectation that “you 100 percent are going to have a projectile thrown at you probably by the end of breakfast.”
That practical approach gives the premiere outfit more context. The jeans were not necessarily an attempt to launch a maternity trend. They may simply have reflected how Hathaway currently prefers to dress while navigating pregnancy, parenting and a packed promotional schedule.
Her announcement in June also carried more personal weight than the usual celebrity reveal. Hathaway has previously discussed experiencing a miscarriage and said her path to conception had not been “a straight line,” referring openly to “infertility and conception hell.”
During a July appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, she described the third pregnancy as unexpected. Other coverage quoted her calling it both a “buzzer-beater” pregnancy and “a blessing.”
The look arrived during a five-film year
The premiere was promoting The End of Oak Street, a science-fiction survival film directed by David Robert Mitchell and produced by J.J. Abrams and others. Hathaway stars alongside Ewan McGregor, Maisy Stella and Christian Convery.
Warner Bros. describes the story as following a suburban family transported by a cosmic event into an unknown environment. The film is scheduled to open in North American cinemas and IMAX on August 14.
It is one part of an unusually busy 2026 slate for the Oscar-winning actress. Her five-film lineup includes:
