Alix Earle’s panic attack became the point when constant online scrutiny stopped feeling manageable. In a July 26 TikTok video, the influencer said an increase in negative comments contributed to a tearful breakdown, breathing difficulties and several days away from social media.

Earle, 25, said she had generally been able to read commentary about herself without becoming overwhelmed. Recently, however, the tone appeared more hostile, or she was simply seeing more of it. With an audience of roughly 8.3 million TikTok followers as of July 17, according to CreatorDB, even a small hostile fraction can produce a very large pile of opinions.

“That’s gonna get to you in a sense or make you overthink when you’re constantly reading about what you’re doing, the way that you look, who you’re hanging out with, what you’re saying,” she said. “Honestly, there was a point this week where I just broke.”
